Towards the end of 1997, Water UK's Sustainability Group embarked on a project to develop a set of indicators of environmental sustainability for the UK water industry. 25 indicators were identified covering all major environmental issues under four environmentally- related themes: · the provision of water services to standards acceptable to society · 'good' environmental management · local environment and its biodiversity · energy and material flows through an organisation. Sustainability remains an evolving area of human concern and understanding. This paper should be regarded as a working set of indicators that can evolve over time and expand into social and economic aspects.
